On 30th July 2017,thousands of Anglicans faithfuls and people from all walks of life, gathered at the historic Ihura Stadium for the rare occasion of Consecration and Enthronement of the 4th Diocesan Bishop Rt.Rev Dr. Timothy Irungu Gichere. The occasion was attended by more than twenty Anglican Bishops led by His Grace the Archbishop of Kenya The Most Rev.Jackson Ole Sapit. The Deputy President of Kenya also graced the occasion among other dignitaries. The Bishop highlighted seven key areas in his inaugural Charge, which would form part of his Episcopal Ministry during his time in office.
1.Strengthening spiritual formation and numerical growth.
The Bishop is very keen to see a spiritually healthy church. In his own words he says that “lack of quantitive growth, indicates a qualitative problem”. In this regard the Bishop desire to see people grow numerically. He has tasked the clergy and the evangelist to ensure that this is done. He has also indicated that in future, those going for theological training must get Diocesan consent to collectively streamline and enhance ministry.
2.Effective pastoral ministry
The Bishop is conscious and aware of the fact that, for numerical growth to be realized there has to be effective pastoral ministry. Bishop has already looked into the welfare of the clergy and other workers in the Diocese, to effectively enable them perform this vital role. He is keen to see the clergy and the evangelists working in a conducive environment where their needs are well catered for.
3.Reclaiming the prophetic voice
The Kenyan society today is bedeviled with many social ills from Corruption in the public sector, to tribalism and ethnicity, all these are social ills in our society today. For a long time, the poor have had no voice in the society. They have been denied justice in our courts and the rich have gone flee when they have committed grave crimes. Having been the chairman of peace and justice commission in the Diocese he is ready to reclaim the lost prophetic voice. He will not hesitate to correct, rebuke and admonish any evil happening in the country and at the county level.
4.Partnerships and community engagement for social economic transformation.
The Bishop is aware that this Diocese is a major player in the social economic development in this county in education, health and agriculture. This Diocese has sponsored the many schools in the County. As such, the Bishop is ready to work with all development conscious people in this and many other fields to enhance economic empowerment among our people. He has also formed the diaspora forum which has plans on how to come up with a blue print for economic transformation.
5.Develop a robust information and communication system
As a former chairman of this department in the Diocese, the Bishop is very keen to see effective and efficient flow of information from the Diocese to the local church. He has encouraged the clergy to be techno savvy and use the modern modes of communication instead of travelling all the way to the Diocesan offices for issues that can be responded to through an email or a short message. Amazingly the office has been responding to issues and solutions given in record time. This has been so effective in time and resource management which are very central to the ministry of our Bishop. The bishop’s pastoral letters nowadays are in both English and Kikuyu versions so clergy with English services are not struggling with translation
6.Financial sustainability
The bishop is keen to see that the finances and other resources that the Diocese is endowed with, are well stewarded. To this effect, he has already come up with a system where Sunday collections are well analyzed and handed over to his office for scrutiny. It is his wish, that all the resources we have are well utilized and accounted for, so that the Diocese can sustain herself financially. The Bishop has streamlined and closed all the gaps in terms of proper, efficient, and professional accounting of every coin that goes to the church. He is working to see to it that all churches and institution adopt the best practices in cash management and enhance financial controls.
7.Leadership and governance
Having attended many courses and seminars on leadership and governance both within and outside the country, the Diocesan Bishop has a strong desire to see sound organizational structures and well defined and enhanced reporting mechanism. As a servant leader per excellence as taught by Jesus in Luke 22:24 – 26, his meetings are always on time, brief and to the point. He gets to the parish for Episcopal duties as early 7.30 a.m. His sermons are brief, edifying and well planned. His words of encouragement, caution or administration are well thought out, forthright and well-reasoned.
