Emmanuel church weithaga

A.C.K Immanuel Church Weithaga is arguably the oldest church in our Diocese and only second in the larger Mt. Kenya region to A.C.K St. Paul’s mother church Kabete. The mother church in Kabete was started in 1900 by the Leaky family while the Weithaga church was started in 1903 by The Rev. Wallace Arthur McGregor commonly and locally called Mangereka. The foundation stone of this church was laid on Feb 2nd 1935 by the Bishop of Mombasa then Rt. Rev. R.S Heywood. The Church has since then gone through several renovations and extensions to what it is today. Weithaga pastorate has been served by more than 110 Vicars from 1903 to date. The first Vicar was The Rev. Arthur Wallace McGregor who served from 1903-1925 the longest so far. The current Vicar is the Ven. John Ndegwa Maina who is the Archdeacon of Weithaga and the Vicar General of the Diocese. Weithaga church has been served by more than 110 clergymen so far. The interesting thing about the church is that out of all those who have served there, seven of them have become Bishops in the Anglican Church as shown below;

  1. Rev. Obadiah Kariuki- 1951-1955: Became Assistant Bishop of Mombasa in 1955 and Bishop Of Mt. Kenya in 1960.
  2. Rev. L. J Beecher- 1956: Became Bishop of Mombasa in 1960 and later Archbishop of Kenya and Tanganyika
  3. Rev. Mannases Kuria- 1956: Became Ass. Bishop of Nakuru in 1970, Bishop of Nakuru in 1976, and the Archbishop of Kenya from 1980-1994.
  4. Rev. John Mahia-ini- 1958,1960, 1962-1964,1967,1970: Became the first Bishop of mt. Kenya central in 1984.
  5. Ven. Canon. Julius G. Gachuhe-1993: Became the third Bishop of Mt.Kenya central on 5th Dec 1993.
  6. Ven. Canon Isaac M. Ng’ang’a- 2002: Became the third Bishop of Mt. Kenya Central on 9th Jan 2005.
  7. Rev. Timothy Gichere -1993: Became the 4th Bishop of Mt. Kenya central on 30th July 2017.

Producing seven Bishops. Out of whom two became Archbishop. This is a blessed church. Other notable priests who have served Weithaga include and are not limited to: Rev. Paul Mbatia who was the first African and Kenyan priest in both Anglican and Catholic Church to be ordained in 1920. Others ore, Rev. Daudi Petro who started Mukuria-hungu Church, Nathaniel Gachira, Justine Muna, Esbon Gitura, Jesee Ngure Kariuki, among others. At one time the whole of our Diocese was Weithaga Parish. It had twelve outstations including Gathukeini, Mukuria-hungu, Kahuhia, Njumbi, Muthiria among others. Since the year 2000, Weithaga has been a one Church Parish. The church also host a number of institutions including Weithaga Bible College, Weithaga Boys, Thomas William academy and Mac Gregor primary. The Weithaga church is also a master piece as it currently stands. It has twelve pillars inside and a very beautiful interior. We can confidently say that Immanuel church Weithaga will stand strong for generations to come.
