St. Stephen njumbi

DSC_0122

Njumbi started as an outstation of the larger Weithaga Pastorate in 1902.It then grew into an independent Pastorate later on.The foundation stone of the Church was laid by the Bishop of Mombasa. The permanent Church took the shape of two other Churches i.e. Weithaga and Kahuhia. The three historic Churches were designed by the same Engineer as very spacious and built to outlast their congregations by that time. Its amazing that even today, the three Churches still leave spaces for more people during Service time.Njumbi grew over time to become a major centre of Christianity in that region.Today it’s not only an Archdeaconry Headquarters but also the regional centre for Njumbi region. It is at the hallowed grounds of this historic Church where the remains of the Saints who died during the Maumau uprising are buried.Notable among these tombs is the one of Gadson and Rebbeca husband and wife murdered in 1952 at the height of the uprising. The Church celebrated 100 years of good news in 2014
